This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Miss Chinese Vancouver Pageant, and to celebrate, versatile singer-songwriter Phil Lam has been invited as the special guest performer. Raised in BC and influenced by Cantonese music from a young age, Phil won the “New Talent Singing Awards Vancouver Audition 2007” and went on to represent Vancouver in the “International Chinese New Talent Singing Championship”, where he placed 2nd Runner-Up. In 2009, Phil moved to Hong Kong to pursue his musical dreams and soon after made his debut, winning the “Male New Comer Bronze award However, the initial stages of his career didn't go as smoothly as hoped. His signature song, Mountains and Valleys, finally climbed multiple music charts in 2014 and won numerous awards, such as the " Metro Radio Hits Music Awards," "Top 10 Professional Picks at the Ultimate Song Chart Awards," and the " The Jade Solid Gold Awards." The music video for this song became one of the most viewed Cantonese videos on YouTube, solidifying his place in the music industry.
Following this success, Phil released several popular albums and got major music awards, including the "Ultimate Singer-Songwriter Gold Award," the "Metro Radio Hit Awards for Best Singer-Songwriter," and the "Most Popular Male Singer Award." His songs “Someone Echoes” and “A Pair of Hands” also garnered recognition, winning the "Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs Award" and "The Jade Solid Gold Awards," showcasing his impressive song writing and music talent. In 2017, Phil held his first solo concert in Hong Kong, with all three shows selling out instantly, demonstrating his immense popularity. In 2022, he became a mentor on TVB's singing competition show STARS Academy 2, marking a significant milestone in his career.
As he continued to explore new musical directions, Phil released songs in different styles, including the EDM-inspired “Prisoner of Time,” which achieved three No. 1 and one No. 2 rankings on various charts. Phil has also written numerous hit songs for some of the biggest names in Hong Kong's music scene, earning him the title of “Hong Kong’s Singer-Songwriter Prince.” Many of his compositions have gone on to win awards and top charts, including “How Are You Lately” and “Powerful Love Song” for Jason Chan, “Solitude” and “Dear My Friend” for MIRROR’s Keung To, “Promising Young Man” for Edan Lui, “Don’t Be Nice to Me” for Angela Hui, “It's Hard Enough for Me” for Mischa Ip, and "The First Fan" for Jeffrey Ngai’s debut single.
In addition to hosting the “Mountains and Valleys 10th Anniversary Special Concert” this year, Phil also appeared on Japan's renowned music channel The First Take, performing a one-take rendition of a newly arranged version of “Mountains and Valleys”. In August, Phil embraced a new chapter in his life, becoming a father, and wrote a heartfelt song titled “Just a Lullaby” to commemorate the tender moment of meeting his son for the first time. As a talent nurtured by Fairchild Television, Phil's musical achievements are closely tied to his roots in Vancouver. Returning home with honors, his performance at the Miss Chinese Vancouver Pageant's 30th Anniversary will undoubtedly light up the stage with his remarkable talent.
